‘Madeleine body’ search called off 15th June 17:17

Police close off an area where investigators searched with sniffer dogs

Portuguese police officers with sniffer dogs carried out a fruitless search for the body of Madeleine McCann on Friday after a tip-off from a Dutch source.

Starting at dawn, they cordoned off an area nine miles from where she was abducted in Praia da Luz.

For several hours, more than 30 Guarda Nacional Repulicana, 20 Policia Judiciara (PJ) and four specialist dogs combed the scrubland. But the search was called off later in the morning and the lead dismissed.

Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa from the PJ said: “The search has been carried out. This clue has been completely checked and the result was negative, so the investigation goes on.”

He said the dogs had not found anything significant and denied claims that officers had dug up land: “If the dogs do not pick up any sign then why would we dig? We would only dig if the dogs found anything relevant on the ground.”

Two police vans and seven unmarked police cars were involved in the search in the tiny village of Arao, north east of Praia da Luz.

Cordons were established on all roads surrounding the search area – a desolate hillside covered in trees and wasteland just north of the main road to Faro.

The formal search was carried out two days after Portuguese police were told about an anonymous letter alleging that Madeleine had been buried under rocks in the area.

The letter, which was accompanied by a map marked with a cross, was sent to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf on Monday.

Publishing the details on Wednesday, it said Madeleine’s body was lying hidden in scrubland just seven metres from the road.

Madeleine police search scrubland 15th June 09:39

Police searching just nine miles from where Madeleine McCann was abducted

Portuguese police have started searching an area of scrubland, just nine miles from where Madeleine McCann was abducted.

Police vans, one carrying sniffer dogs, moved in at first light in the village of Arao, not far from Praia da Luz.

It is now 43 days since the four-year-old was taken from her bed as she slept in the Algarve resort.

A section of the police, known as GNR, cordoned off the road in the tiny village as they carried out their search.

Two days ago Portuguese police were told about an anonymous letter alleging that Madeleine had been buried under rocks in this area.

The information was sent to a Dutch newspaper, The Telegraaf. It claimed her body was just seven metres from the road.

Portuguese police started investigating the claim on Wednesday but it has taken until Friday to start any formal search proceedings.

The village which has been cordoned off lies just north of the main road from Praia da Luz to Faro.

The road leads up to a myriad of remote hillside tracks which fan out into farmland and wooded areas.

The weather was overcast as police carried out their search, with periods of unseasonal rain. The police vans were followed by seven unmarked cars.

Scrubland search for Madeleine ends

Posted by cotojo on June 14, 2007

There are no plans to further search the scrubland where a letter said missing Madeleine McCann could be buried, Portuguese police have said.

An anonymous letter in a Dutch newspaper said the four-year-old’s body could be found “under branches or stones” nine miles from the Algarve resort where she disappeared from her bedroom on May 3.

Seven police searched the area described in the letter, according to reports.

Police chief inspector Olegario de Sousa said: “For now, we have no concrete plans to enter the terrain again.”

A spokesman for the local GNR police, which handles day-to-day policing, said they had received no request from the investigative team for help or to bring sniffer dogs to the area.

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for Madeleine’s parents, said police are examining the letter to verify whether it was authentic.

The police have received countless leads in their investigation, including a possible sighting of Madeleine in Morocco.

So far they have made no arrests and have identified only one suspect – Briton Robert Murat – in their case.

Ch Insp De Sousa said a group of journalists had hired sniffer dogs to search the area. He said: “These people are people who have no police training and who are walking around the bush looking for a scoop.”

Madeleine disappeared from her bed while her parents dined at a nearby restaurant in the small Praia da Luz Algarve resort.

Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have launched a high-profile campaign to draw attention to her disappearance, including meeting with the Pope in Rome and winning support from personalities such as David Beckham.

Gerry McCann said in the diary he publishes online (www.findmadeleine.com) he was upset by the Dutch paper publishing the letter, saying it should have been passed on to Portuguese police before publication.

He said: “We were extremely disappointed in the publication of the anonymous letter in the Telegraaf claiming to know where Madeleine is buried.”

A Prayer for the Stressed

Grant Me The Serenity To Accept
Things I Cannot Change. The Courage
To Change The Things I Cannot Accept
And The Wisdom To Hide The Bodies Of
Those I Had To Kill Today Because They
Got On My Nerves, And Also Help Me To
Be Careful Of The Toes I Step On Today
As They May Be Connected To The Feet
I May Have To Kiss Tomorrow.
Help Me Always To Give 100% At Work.

12% On Monday

23% On Tuesday

40% On Wednesday

20% On Thursday

5% On Friday

And Help Me To Remember When I’m
Having A Bad Day And It Seems That
People Are Trying To Wind Me Up,
It Takes 42 Muscles To Frown,
28 To Smile…………………………….
And Only Four To Extend My Arm
And Smack Someone In The Mouth!!!
