Life 1 – Something to Ponder

Posted by cotojo on June 19, 2007

Last week marked the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the Falklands by UK armed forces.  Services of remembrance took place in the Falkland Islands and in the UK.  In total, more than 255 British servicemen, 650 Argentines and three islanders were killed in the conflict that lasted for 74 days.

Sadly, throughout other parts of the world, conflict continues daily.  Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine to mention but a few. The threat of terrorist attack is something that our political leaders use to instil fear and have done so since the tragic events of 9/11.

If weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq, as we were told they would be before the war, more people would have regarded the war as a necessary evil.

The cruel irony for the outgoing Blair is that Thatcher went to war from a position of political weakness and returned from it with greater support, whereas he went to war from a strong position and lost support as a result. If Thatcher had shirked the Falkland’s war, she’d probably have gone down in history as a PM who served one term and lost control of a group of islands in the South Atlantic. Had Blair been responsible for Britain playing no part in the Iraq conflict, his legacy would have been far more impressive than the one he will leave on June 27, which the Iraq war debacle will dominate.

What have we gained though?  The bloodshed continues and the body count rises.

Where are these terrorist attacks?

How many bodies will come back in bags fighting a war we cannot even hope to win?

What has happened to democracy, peace, helping each other?

Is mankind really so hell bent on self-destruction?  The political leaders are a joke, they sit in their comfortable offices making world changing decisions and they really couldn’t care what you think, you gave them the power and now they abuse it along with their army of penpushers.  We use the internet to communicate with each other from all parts of the world, there is no hatred for each other regardless of race, religion, political beliefs, upbringing and so on.  We unite and communicate in a way that the world leaders could really learn a lesson from…….common dialogue.Along the way we make new friends, open our minds a bit more and accept each other for who we are.  We debate freely, pass comments, help each other along the way with advice and sharing of ideas. How long before the politicians realise the enormity and impact of the internet?
