Missing Maddie – Major New Hunt, August 20th

Posted by cotojo on August 20, 2007

Portugese police searching for missing Madeleine McCann have announced that they will today start a major new hunt. The investigation has shifted direction with the arrival of British detectives and sniffer dogs to assist with the enquiry.

Investigators also say they have “other evidence” and have applied for warrants to search areas where Maddie may have been taken the night she vanished.

A Portuguese police source has said that a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes for some time and the next few days are going to be decisive.  All leave has been cancelled and officers put on standby for this major operation.

It was believed that the 109-day hunt for four-year-old Maddie was stalling, but police sources have said that they have other evidence to work on apart from the DNA and other forensic tests.

There is expected to be an increase in police activity who will be looking in areas that Maddie may have been taken to on the night she disappeared.

Expat Pamela Fenn, is among those to be questioned. She is reported to have disturbed a burglar in her apartment two weeks pror to Maddie’s disappearance.  Her apartment is located above the apartment in which the McCanns stayed in Praia da Luz.  Other witnesses are also expected to be re-interviewed this week.

There are also unconfirmed reports that police may be about to arrest a new suspect in the UK in the coming days.

Early DNA tests showed that the blood specks found came from a man, and was not Maddie’s. But the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham, UK, which is carrying out the analysis of the samples, has said that the tests were still ongoing, with the full results expected early this week.

Over the weekend Kate and Gerry McCann met a British man who had faced a similar ordeal.

Missing Maddie – Parents Torment Deepens

Posted by cotojo on August 15, 2007

The torment deepened for the parents of missing Madeleine McCann yesterday — when it was reported in the Portugese press that police believed their daughter was dead and her body then dumped at sea, after her body was bundled into a sack weighed down with stones.

Maddie has now been missing for 104 days, and in recent weeks the Portugese press have started to turn against the McCann’s pointing the finger at them and accusing them of involvement in their daughters disappearance.

The McCann’s have strongly denied this and the police have also stated that they are not treating them as suspects. They have questioned the family and friends who were there at the time, and ruled them out of any foul play.

The latest reports follow the tiny specks of blood found by British sniffer dogs, and reports that the police had consulted João Alveirinho Dias, professor at the University of the Algarve and specialist in Oceanography, to examine where local tides may have taken Maddies’s body.

There is still no news on the results of DNA samples taken from the holiday apartment where Maddie was taken from.

The lawyer for Robert Murat, the only suspect in this case at present, last week also launched a scathing attack saying “These bloody McCanns should just go away and leave this town.”

The McCann’s are adamant that they will not leave until their daughter is found and will continue keeping the high-profile of this case going.

Missing Maddie – DNA Results Prove Negative Press Accuse Parents

Posted by cotojo on August 8, 2007

Belgian sources confirmed today that DNA on a drinks bottle used by a young girl in Belgium did NOT match that of missing Maddie.

It is reported that the sample was from a man so police have not ruled out that Madeleine was present as he may have finished the bottle of drink.

Belgian police are still trying to trace a car, described as a modern black Volvo registered in Belgium, used by the couple and child.

Meanwhile, Portugese newspapers are reporting that the parents of the missing Maddie are the main suspects in her disappearance and death after blood samples were found in the apartment where the family were staying. It is also being reported that the police are asking family members and friends to return to Portugal to be questioned again.

Holiday Complex

One newspaper said local police believe the blood is hers and that she is no longer alive.

Maddie’s parents, Gerry and Kate, have denied all reports and accusations that they are suspects in the case and Portugese police also deny this.

The police have always maintained that they are looking for a living child.

They are also saying that Madeleine died accidentally and that someone cleaned up the blood inside the apartment. Minute traces of blood were found by investigators using specially trained dogs from the UK, and DNA tests are now being carried out on these. It could be Maddie’s blood, or the abductor’s or it could have come from any of the hundreds of other people who stayed in the apartment before the McCann family.

Police Forensic Team

Speculation has grown in recent days that prime suspect Robert Murat is out of the frame, leaving the focus of the investigation fixed on the McCann party.

A car hired by the McCann’s five weeks after Maddie disappeared was taken in to be forensically examined. It is expected the couple will be re-interviewed by police separately this week.

Last night Portuguese police spokesman Olegario Sousa said: “The family are not suspects. This is the official position.  There are several fronts open in the inquiry. All the details are under secrecy.”

Cops in Switzerland are liaising with Interpol to find if there was a link between Maddie and a paedophile who shot himself.

Urs Hans Von Aesch committed suicide in a Swiss forest close to the belongings of missing five-year-old Ylenia Lenhard.

Portuguese detectives have been told of similarities between the girls’ abductions. Von Aesch is thought to have been near Praia da Luz when Maddie vanished 97 days ago.

Other sources said cops had consulted João Alveirinho Dias, professor at the University of the Algarve and specialist in Oceanography, to examine where local tides may have taken Maddies’s body.

Forensic labs in Lisbon were rushing the tests through. They were comparing the blood samples with DNA taken from Madeleine’s bed, possibly from a hair, in the days after she disappeared.

But it could be weeks before the results are known.

A child protection expert said he would be “staggered” if it turned out the blood was missed during early examinations of the apartment.

He also added that this discovery should have been made on Day One and if it proves significant it will show just how inept the Portuguese police were at carrying out the initial forensics tests.

In Belgium, tests were being done on a cup used by a girl fitting Maddie’s description in Tongeron and the results are expected today.

Missing Maddie – Suspect Changed Alibi

Posted by cotojo on July 31, 2007

Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat changed his alibi when grilled by police, it has been alleged.

Suspect Robert Murat

The Brit initially told cops he was with his German girlfriend when Maddie was snatched from her parents’ holiday apartment, it was said.

But when officially declared a suspect 11 days later he changed his story, police sources disclosed.

In his statement he said he was with his mother Jenny, 71, all night at their apartment 50 yards from the snatch scene in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

The alleged inconsistency is one of several about which Murat has been quizzed by cops — and he remains the only named suspect in the 12-week probe.

Murat was often seen near the scene in the days after the abduction.A source in Portugal claimed: “When people started asking questions, he said he was with his girlfriend, Michaela Walczuch, when Madeleine was taken. He also said the same thing to his friends. But when he was taken to the police station, he told them he was with his mother. “He’s stuck to this version since. Nobody knows why he changed his story.”Murat’s girlfriend was questioned, but police have not disclosed what she told them.Murat, who has always denied any involvement in the abduction, has been interviewed twice since Maddie, four, was taken.

She was snatched on May 3 while mum Kate and Gerry had a meal nearby.

It is thought Murat will be questioned again soon. Police sources, meanwhile, also confirmed suspicion fell on the oddball after he allegedly asked several people to supply him with an alibi.

A team of Cracker-style manhunters were drafted into the Madeleine McCann probe yesterday. It has now been revealed that Specialist criminal profilers from the UK flew to the Algarve to review evidence gleaned during the 12-week hunt for the tot’s abductor.

The team, like Robbie Coltrane’s character Fitz in TV show Cracker, are now at work constructing a psychological profile of the kidnapper to help Portuguese police. They are experts in predicting the behaviour of paedophiles.

Gerry McCann met with an ex-FBI agent and the British Ambassador on his trip to Washington in a bid to keep the search for his missing daughter high profile. He then flew back to Portugal to be reunited with his wife Kate and two children.

Gerry wrote on the website he felt his visit to Washington had been successful. He said he had a meeting with congressman Mike Rogers who was an ex-FBI agent and he distributed wristbands to the congressman’s colleagues as well as members of National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

He said: “I have no doubt that this visit to Washington has been extremely productive and will really help to maintain Madeleine’s profile.  We will continue to work closely with the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children who have incredible experience and energy in dealing with missing children.”

He said it was great to be back with his family and asked people to continue putting up posters so that the search remains high profile.  You can download the poster HERE

“We ask people to continue downloading posters from the website and display them at bus stations, train stations and of course take them on holiday.”
