Tomorrow (Saturday) marks the 100th day since 4 year old Maddie disappeared, and it will be marked with the launch on YouTube of “Don’t You Forget About Me”, which will feature videos of missing children around the world in a bid to raise public awareness about their disappearance.
The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have insisted they will not be bullied into leaving Portugal.Locally, there has been a growing backlash against the couple and the local press have made claims that Madeleine was killed in the apartment and not abducted.
The Daily Express reported that the lawyer acting for the only suspect in the case, Briton Robert Murat, said locals wanted “these bloody McCanns” to return to Britain. Murat’s lawyers have said he hopes to receive a letter formally clearing him of his status as a suspect in the coming days or weeks.
The McCanns have been besieged by the Portuguese media this week and were forced to change their daily routine of taking their two-year-old twins to the creche at the resort in the seaside village.
Mr and Mrs McCann are said to have found recent suggestions in the Portuguese press that Madeleine was murdered on the night she vanished “very hurtful”. They have consistently said they believe their daughter is still alive.
Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa, of Portugal’s police, stressed again this week that the family were not suspects.
It is also being reported that Portugese police want to question a British man on who was on holiday in Praia da Luz at the same time as the McCanns. He is also said to have helped in the search for missing Maddie.
He arrived in Portugal on April 28, the same day as the McCann’s, and left on May 6, the same day that the McCann’s should have flown home, according Portugese press reports. The reports also claim that police investigating the disappearance of Maddie, have found the car that he rented from a car hire agency.
They are now trying to establish whether he had any connections with the McCanns.
There has been no comment from Portuguese police, and in the past they have been consistent with their refusal to confirm or deny any reports about the investigation.
