Portugese investigators have now handed their dossier containing details of their case to the prosecutor who is quickly expected to hand the case over to a judge for a decision on whether there is sufficent evidence for charges to be brought.
The move came as it was revealed that DNA evidence from the holiday apartment and hire car are a 100% match to missing Madeleine.
An official at the Attorney Generals Office, which oversees prosecutors, has confirmed that they are in possession of the 1,000+ page dossier.
Neither the police nor the prosecutor’s office would give any details because of the Portugese secrecy laws which cover ongoing investigations.
Police sources say they have three formal suspects, Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann and Robert Murat. At present all have denied any involvement and no charges have been brought against anyone relating to the case.
The judge now has 10 days to make a decision on the prosecutor’s request, but it could be made within the next few days with a request for the McCann’s to return to Portugal.
Meanwhile, the couple who returned home to Roxley, Leicestershire, UK on Sunday, have also been visited by Detective Chief Superintendent Bob Small, Leicestershire’s top detective. The East Midlands Police Force refused to pass any comment on the visit.
The couple are also believed to have appointed solictors to assist their Portugese lawyer in preparing their defence if any charges are brought against them.
In Portugal, police have started new searches in the area around the holiday complex in Praia da Luz.
