Missing Maddie – Parents Officially Named as Suspects

Posted by cotojo on September 7, 2007

Update: Saturday September 8th, 0800 hrs

Portugese police have now  formally named both parents as suspects in the case of their missing daughter Madeleine.  This come after the couple were questioned at length at the Policia Judiciaria headquarters in Portimao over the past two days.

Investigators have not said why they are now focusing on the McCanns, but a relative has said that it  appears that traces of Maddies blood was found in a car rented by the family 25 days after she went missing.

At present, no charges have been made and both parents deny any involvement over their daughters disappearance.  This could also be  aploy to take attention away from the inept handling of the investigation in the early stages.  There was nothing of any significance found until British forensic experts moved in with specialist equipment and sniffer dogs.

The authorities now have the power to stop the parents leaving the country, as it is known that they planned to return home to the UK.

Update: Friday September 7th, 2200 hrs

A relative of the McCanns has disclosed that the Portugese Investigators want Kate McCann to ‘confess’ to accidentally killing her daughter, offering her a deal that would ‘guarantee a 2 year jail sentence, or less because people feel sorry for her’.

There has been no confirmation of this from the Portugese Police, who remain tight-lipped about this weeks events.  This follows 11 hours of questioning yesterday and a further 13 hours today for Kate.  Her husband Gerry is still being questioned ny the authorities.

It would also seem that the pink fluffy toy that Kate carried everywhere as a reminder of Maddie has also been kept by the investigating team.

Today police in Portugal confirmed that Kate McCann, mother of missing Madeleine, was now being formally treated as a suspect in her daughters disappearance.

This comes as it was announced that traces of Maddie’s blood was found in a car that the family had rented some 25 days after her disappearance.

Kate McCann spent 11 hours yesterday at the Policia Judiciaria headquarters in Portimao and looked visibly shaken as she left, and had to return there again this morning for further interviews with investigators.

Her husband, Gerry, is now also being re-interviewed by investigators.

The Portugese police have made no public statements on what is happening at present nor any mention of the results of forensic tests carried out in the UK.

Relatives are quoted as saying that police are suggesting that Kate accidentally killed her daughter.

The authorities have always maintained that the McCanns were never suspects, only being questioned as witnesses, but both now are formal suspects in the case, which offers them greater legal protection.

Sandy – I think you have summed up what so many of us are thinking very well.

If it is the police looking for scapegoats it’s a cruel way of doing things. They were expecting a major breakthrough but somehow this doesn’t seem to fit the bill!!

  2. I certainly hope truth and justice prevail. I live in a part of the world where it seems there are no surprises. It seems there are just plenty of people who do sick things and don’t realize what they’ve done is sick or even that they’ve done it. Then too there are the scapegoaters who will string up anybody to save their own necks. I hope this is all resolved soon.

Michelle – Thank you for passing by and for your comment.

It looks as though the Portugese police are looking for scapegoats as they have not charged either of the parents and refuse to say what evidence they now have.

It’s all a bit strange at the moment, hopefully there will be more news over the next couple of days.

It’s hard to imagine that the parents are responsible. If they didn’t do it, it’s horrible. If they did, it’s horrible. There is just no way for this story to have a happy outcome.

Thanks for staying on top of this story all these months.

Jaden – Thank you for passing by and for your comment.

It is a sad story and very protracted. As you so rightly say, hopefully the truth will come out soon and that justice will be served.

Those who are guilty of this heinous crime should rot in hell.

  6. oh and that the guilty will rot in jail like rat droppings.

  7. That is such a sad story. I pray that the truth will come and justice be served.

Lisa – Yes it seems that the police are now trying to turn the attention away from themselves, having handled it quite badly from the outset.

Hopefully, some good will come out of all of this in days to come.

Sue – DNA should be pretty much conclusive, but the Portugese aren’t saying what the forensic results are.
It could also be a ploy to take the focus away from the inept way in which this case was dealt with initially. It wasn’t until UK forensic teams moved in that there were any significant findings.
It is also widely believed that by naming the parents as suspects they now have the power to stop them from leaving the country, as they were planning to return home to the UK.

Surely any DNA evidence will be conclusive these days – maybe police are using it to get a confession before they have total proof of whose blood it is. In a hire car it could belong to hundreds of people.

Deborah – Today is even worse, 13 hours of questioning for mother and Maddies father still there. There are rumours that the police want Kate McCann to ‘confess’ to accidentally killing her daughter.

It’s also worth noting that the cuddly toy she took everywhere with her has also been kept by the investigators.

Because of the laws in Portugal there is a great deal of information they won’t release as it may prejudice the investigation.

There have been similar abductions in the UK and the media are very quick to jump to conclusions, often blaming the parents and it frequently turns out to be relative.

They are anticipating some sort of breakthrough over the next few days, but it sounds a bit more like coercion at present.

If they are truly innocent, they’ve had a long and difficult struggle on top of dealing with the loss of their child. Could you imagine being questioned for 11 grueling hours? I’m sure it’s not as simple as it sounds either.

We had a similar situation from my city a number of years ago, and the parents were subjected to sheer horrors from the media and police. It turned out to be an uncle to the child if I remember correctly.
